Overview

The Imperial College Business School Graduate Teaching Assistant Scholarship is a fully funded doctoral opportunity for exceptional candidates seeking to pursue PhD research at one of the world’s leading business schools. The programme combines a two-year Master of Research (MRes) with a 3-4 year PhD, providing comprehensive training in quantitative research methods and specialised business knowledge.

For African applicants from Zimbabwe and the SADC region, this represents a rare opportunity to join a highly selective programme—only approximately 15 students are admitted annually from around 200 applications worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions

The programme is highly competitive globally—approximately 15 students are admitted from around 200 applications annually. There is no quota system; selection is based on academic excellence, test scores, research fit, and interview performance. Strong quantitative preparation and a well-aligned research proposal improve your prospects.
In exceptional circumstances, yes. You must hold a strong First Class Honours undergraduate degree supported by very strong academic references, an outstanding CV, and an exceptional personal statement. This is reviewed on an individual basis.
No. A valid GMAT or GRE score must be submitted before your application will be considered. The Business School does not make conditional offers based on future test scores. Scores must be at least in the 90th percentile, with specific preferred totals: GMAT 700+ or GMAT Focus 655+.
The research does not specify fee waivers for GMAT/GRE or application fees. You should contact doctoral@imperial.ac.uk to inquire about potential support. Many SADC region applicants secure external funding for test preparation and fees through national scholarship boards or international organisations.
Browse faculty research profiles on the Business School website. You need not secure supervisor commitment before applying, but you must name a potential supervisor and demonstrate alignment with their research interests in your statement of purpose. If no faculty work in your area, you are unlikely to be shortlisted.
Continuation depends on satisfactory academic progress. A sixth year may be funded case-by-case through teaching or research assistant studentships with Business School research centres. You should discuss options with the Doctoral team during your MRes year.
