Supervision and Training

PhD supervision is available from established researchers including Dr Sarah Atkins, Dr Lucia Busso, Dr Emily Chiang, Dr Felicity Deamer, Prof. Tim Grant, Dr Nicci Macleod, Prof. Geoffrey Stewart Morrison, Dr Ralph Morton, and Dr Tahmineh Tayebi. Successful candidates receive wide-ranging training through AIFL and the Doctoral Training Programme at Aston Graduate School.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must hold or expect to achieve:

  • First or Upper Second Class Honours undergraduate degree in a relevant subject
  • Master’s degree with Merit or Distinction in a relevant subject

Overseas qualifications are accepted if performance is equivalent to UK standards. The University reserves the right to determine equivalence.

  • Two academic references on headed paper, signed and dated within 2 years (at least one from most recent university; may submit later if necessary)
  • Evidence of English language proficiency (may submit later if not currently held)

  • Evidence of settled or pre-settled status where relevant

Location and Attendance

The position is based at Aston Campus, Birmingham, UK. Candidates must live within reasonable distance and visit campus regularly. This is a full-time, on-site programme.

About AIFL

Founded in 2008 as the Centre for Forensic Linguistics, AIFL expanded substantially in 2019 following a £5.5 million UK Government grant. The institute focuses on language use in legal and forensic contexts.
