Why This Matters for African Scholars
For researchers from Zimbabwe and the SADC region, the Elkana Fellowship offers particular value. Higher education policy research is critically needed across Africa, where universities face rapid expansion, funding constraints, quality challenges, and internationalization pressures. CEU’s location in Vienna provides access to European policy networks, while the fellowship’s multidisciplinary structure accommodates diverse methodological approaches common in African higher education research.
The €2,002 monthly stipend, while modest by Western European standards, provides reasonable living support in Vienna and is competitive compared to many African doctoral funding opportunities. The four-year funding duration offers stability rare in doctoral scholarships, allowing sustained engagement with complex policy questions.
