Overview
The Small AI for Development Hackathon 2026 is a global innovation challenge organized by the World Bank Group and partners. It targets young innovators who can create artificial intelligence solutions designed to function in environments with limited internet connectivity, computing power, smartphones, and digital infrastructure.
Unlike conventional AI competitions that reward large-scale systems, this hackathon prioritizes small, focused, and practical AI solutions built around specific development challenges. The program is particularly relevant for applicants from Zimbabwe and other SADC nations, where infrastructure constraints make lightweight AI tools especially valuable.

What Winners Receive
Three winning teams will be selected—one from each challenge category. Each winning team receives:
- Fully funded trip to Seoul, South Korea (3–4 October 2026)
- Round-trip airfare
- Accommodation
- Meals
- Visa support
Winners will participate in the Global AI & Digital Summit 2026, gaining exposure to global policymakers, technology leaders, and potential investors.

Challenge Categories
Participants must select one sector and develop a Small AI solution addressing a specific problem within that area:
Health
Develop AI solutions for healthcare delivery, disease prevention, or health system strengthening in resource-limited settings. Examples might include offline diagnostic tools, SMS-based health information systems, or predictive models for disease outbreaks.

Agriculture
Build AI-powered tools that address practical farming challenges and demonstrate measurable value for smallholder farmers. Solutions could involve crop monitoring, pest prediction, market price forecasting, or irrigation optimization using minimal data connectivity.
Tourism
Create practical AI applications for tourism sector challenges, potentially including visitor management, cultural heritage preservation, or sustainable tourism development.
Eligible Technologies
The hackathon encourages solutions using:
- Locally running AI models (edge computing)
- SMS and voice-based interfaces
- Sensors and microcontrollers
- Predictive AI
- Generative AI
- AI agents
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet all requirements:
- Age: 18–35 years old at time of application
- Nationality: Citizen of a World Bank member country (all SADC nations including Zimbabwe qualify)
- Team structure: Individual applicants or teams of up to 4 members
- Language: All submissions in English
- Entry limit: One competition entry per person
- Registration: All team members must register individually
Applicants from emerging economies are particularly encouraged to apply. Zimbabwe and SADC applicants bring valuable firsthand experience with the infrastructure constraints this hackathon addresses.
