Overview
IFRA-Nigeria (French Institute for Research in Africa) offers research grants for fieldwork missions and archival stays conducted between January and October 2027. The programme supports approximately one dozen individual or collective projects focused on nine West African countries within IFRA-Nigeria’s geographical mandate.
The institute is located at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and operates with a regional vocation extending across West Africa. Funding Details
Grants are capped at €1,000 maximum, with the exact amount determined by project nature and budget requirements. The funding is disbursed in two instalments:
- First payment (50%): January 2027, upon project commencement
- Second payment (50%): After submission of final report, due by 15 November 2027
The grant covers fieldwork missions and/or archival research stays. Applicants must demonstrate cost-effectiveness and provide detailed budget justification.

Eligible Countries
Research must focus on one or more of these nine countries:
- Nigeria
- Benin
- Burkina Faso
- Cameroon
- Côte d’Ivoire
- Ghana
- Niger
- Chad
- Togo
Research Axes
Projects must align with at least one of four research priorities:
- Axis 1: Beliefs, bodies and health
- Axis 2: Citizenship, gender and mobilisation
- Axis 3: Heritage dynamics and environment
- Transversal axis: Digital Humanities
Eligibility Requirements
Open to:
- Second-year Master’s students (Master 2)
- Doctoral students
- Postdoctoral researchers
- Established researchers in academic positions
Discipline restriction: Humanities and social sciences only. Projects outside these fields are ineligible.
Nationality: No restrictions. Researchers from Zimbabwe, SADC, and worldwide may apply provided their research focuses on eligible West African countries.
Partnerships: Sustainable collaborations with institutions or researchers in the host country are strongly encouraged.
Required Documents
All documents must be combined into a single PDF file:
- Cover letter (1 page maximum, Arial 12, default margins)
- CV (3 pages maximum)
- Budget using the official template, including:
- Total project cost
- Detailed explanation of IFRA-Nigeria funds requested
- Any other funding sources (requested or received)
- Research proposal (4 pages maximum, excluding bibliography and budget) using official template, containing:
- Scientific project description
- Detailed work plan (dates, itinerary, objectives)
- List of institutional partnerships
- Valorisation perspectives (publications, oral communications)
- Bibliography

Notification: All applicants receive email responses by December 2026 at latest
Scientific Integrity Requirements
IFRA-Nigeria enforces strict integrity standards:
- Proposals must be written personally by the applicant
- AI tools are prohibited without explicit disclosure and justification
- Applicants must read IFRA-Nigeria’s official position on AI use (available on their “calls & grants” page)
- Violations result in automatic disqualification and potential exclusion from future collaboration
For individual projects, the applicant must personally conduct all research. For collaborative projects, all participants and their roles must be clearly identified.
Valorisation Requirements
All projects must include a valorisation component connecting to IFRA-Nigeria’s editorial and research activities, such as:
- Academic publications
- Oral communications/conference presentations
- Other dissemination activities
