Six Development Themes

Applications must align with one of six CSC development themes:

  2. Strengthening health systems and capacity

  4. Strengthening global peace, security and governance
  5. Strengthening resilience and response to crises
  6. Access, inclusion and opportunity

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify, you must:

  • Be a citizen or have refugee status in an eligible country, and be permanently resident there
  • Be available to start studies in the UK by September/October 2027
  • Hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours, OR a second class degree plus a relevant Master’s qualification, by October 2027
  • NOT be registered for a PhD or MPhil leading to PhD at any UK university before September/October 2027
  • Be unable to afford UK study without this scholarship

Application Process

The application involves multiple steps and two separate submissions:

Step 1: Secure Sussex Supervision

Contact a potential supervisor at the University of Sussex. They must provide a signed supporting statement on institutional letterhead or via official Sussex email, in PDF format. Apply for your PhD place at Sussex well before the scholarship deadline to allow time for this.

Step 2: Submit PhD Application to Sussex

Apply online at http://www.sussex.ac.uk/study/phd/apply with:

  • CV
  • Degree transcripts and certificates
  • Statement of interest (with project title and supervisor name)
  • Two academic referees
  • Valid IELTS certificate

Step 3: Apply to Commonwealth Scholarship Commission

Submit your scholarship application via the CSC online system by 16:00 GMT on 20 October 2026. Include:

  • Development Impact Statement showing how your research links to global, national, and local development issues
  • Alignment with your chosen CSC theme
  • Plans for applying skills after the scholarship ends

Step 4: Apply to a Nominating Agency

You must also apply to a nominating agency in your home country (typically a government ministry or national scholarship body). These agencies shortlist candidates and forward top applications to the CSC. Each agency sets its own deadlines, which may differ from the CSC deadline.
