Overview
The World Bank Group Young Professionals Program (YPP) is the institution’s flagship leadership development initiative. It targets highly talented individuals who are passionate about addressing the world’s most pressing development challenges. The program combines technical expertise building, international experience, and direct contribution to projects across the World Bank Group’s global operations.
For African professionals from Zimbabwe and the SADC region, this represents a rare opportunity to influence development policy at the highest international level while building networks that span government, finance, and civil society globally.

Program Structure and Duration
The YPP is a 2-year program with a GF-level term appointment. Upon successful completion, participants receive placement in a role for an additional 5 years based on performance, with possibility of contract renewal.
Rotation System
Participants complete three mandatory 8-month rotations:

- One rotation within your primary function and area of expertise
- One cross-institutional rotation
- At least one rotation based in a country office (guaranteeing field experience)
This structure ensures broad exposure to global operations and diverse development challenges.

Eligibility Requirements
Education
Minimum graduate-level degree or higher qualification in a relevant field, completed before the September start date.
Professional Experience
2 to 6 years of professional experience in the related work area. For doctoral candidates: full-time doctoral research studies in a relevant field at an accredited institution may count toward required work experience, provided the degree is substantially complete with all written work submitted before the September start date.
Critical date: Years of experience are calculated from your earliest full-time professional experience after completing your undergraduate degree, as of September 1, 2026.
Language Proficiency
Excellent command of spoken and written English is mandatory. Fluency in additional languages—particularly French, Portuguese, Arabic, or regional African languages—is considered an advantage and may strengthen your application.
Employment Restrictions
- Cannot be a current World Bank Group employee at time of application (including term, open, short-term, and extended-term appointments)
- Cannot have a close relative working at the World Bank Group
- Cannot have a spouse in a direct or indirect supervisory relationship
- Active Independent Contractors are ineligible
Age
There is no age requirement. Eligibility is based solely on professional experience.

Required Documents
- CV/Resume: Ideally 1 page, maximum 2 pages
- Passport Photo Page: Confirming birth date and primary nationality (or approved equivalent document)
- Academic Proof: Transcript(s) or enrollment letter(s) verifying post-graduate degrees and expected completion dates
Shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide contact information for two professional references.
Selection Process
The multi-stage selection process includes:
- Eligibility and Application Review: Full applicant list reviewed; top 10% advance
- Asynchronous Video Interview, Stream-Specific Assessment, and Virtual Job Try-out
- Panel Interview and Assessment Center: Conducted in person in Washington DC, Nairobi, Paris, or Bangkok (or online in exceptional cases)
- Final Decision: Background check and offer issuance
Interview and Assessment Center Details
The panel interview lasts approximately 45-50 minutes with technical experts, senior WBG staff, and HR representatives. The assessment center includes:
- Collaborative case exercise (group exercise, ~45 minutes) with joint presentation
- Short written reflection (~15 minutes)
These assess technical depth and breadth, quantitative and qualitative thinking, problem-solving, communication, judgment, self-reflection, motivation, and alignment with WBG mission and values.
Compensation and Benefits
YPP salary and benefits are determined using established World Bank Group criteria and are not individually negotiated. The offer letter provides full details applicable to your appointment.
Visa and Dependents
- Spouses and dependents of WBG staff are eligible for G-4 Dependent Visas
- Domestic partners (not legally married) do not qualify for G-4 dependent status
Preparation Tips for African Applicants
Strong applications demonstrate clear fit with the selected stream. Focus on:
- Specific examples showing depth of technical expertise
- Documented results from your professional work
- Your approach to complex problems in African development contexts
- Conduct reflecting WBG values
- Direct, accurate responses to application questions
Research thoroughly: study the WBG mission, values, Scorecard, and your selected stream’s projects, research, data, and strategy documents. The World Bank Group’s Access to Information policy provides broad public access to this material.
Important Restrictions
- Only one application permitted per cycle; multiple applications result in disqualification
- No deferrals permitted; cohort-based participation is mandatory
- All YPs start at World Bank Group headquarters in Washington, DC
- Rotation locations determined by program requirements and business needs
