Overview

The Master of Intellectual Property and Data Law (MIPDaL) is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree programme funded by the European Commission. The scholarship enables students to study at multiple partner universities across Estonia, France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom. For African applicants from Zimbabwe and the SADC region, this represents a competitive but valuable opportunity to gain specialized legal expertise in IP and data law while experiencing diverse European legal systems.

What the Scholarship Covers

Erasmus Mundus scholarship recipients receive comprehensive funding that includes:

People Also Checked: ENS-PSL International Selection Scholarship 2027 | France Fully Funded Masters (Fully Funded)
  • Full tuition fee waiver for the entire two-year programme
  • Exemption from UK top-up fees (normally £12,000–£20,050 for semester 2 at UK partners)
  • Monthly allowance for accommodation and living expenses
  • Travel costs between partner countries

The consortium can award up to 60 scholarships over five years, with a maximum of 12 students funded per academic year.

Eligibility Requirements

Academic Qualifications

Applicants must hold a qualifying degree of at least 240 ECTS (four years) in law or law-related fields such as criminology or jurisprudence. This can be achieved through:

People Also Checked: GW4 BioMed Scholarship 2027: Fully Funded UK PhD Studentships (Fully Funded)
  • A three-year bachelor’s plus a first master’s degree, or
  • A four-year bachelor’s programme

The degree must be recognized in all participating partner countries. Candidates currently completing their degree may apply conditionally if 80% of credit points are proven through completed examinations or final thesis.

Academic Excellence

Successful applicants typically rank among top-level students in their class. The admitting institutions require equivalence to a UK Bachelor degree with Upper Second Class honours (2:1). Based on programme experience, generally only applicants with a First Class degree have realistic chances of securing the Erasmus Mundus scholarship.

Language Proficiency

English proficiency at C1 level is mandatory for all applicants. For study tracks including France (UNISTRA) or Spain (UC3M), additional language requirements apply:

  • French: C1 level (DALF C1, DELF B2, or TCF C1)
  • Spanish: B2 level (DELE B2 or SIELE B2)

English tests must not be older than 2 years at programme start (5 years for WAEC). IELTS One Skill Retake is accepted within 60 days of original test date.

Geographic Requirement

The two countries of study must differ from the applicant’s country of residence at enrolment. This requirement is automatically satisfied for Zimbabwean and SADC applicants.

Exemptions from Language Tests

English test exemptions apply to:

  • Native speakers from Canada, UK, USA, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and specified Commonwealth Caribbean countries
  • Degree holders from the above majority English-speaking countries
  • Former UK Tier 4 (Child) Students

No exemptions are granted for Medium of Instruction certificates.

  • Officially certified university transcript with English translation
  • Proof of English proficiency (and French/Spanish if applicable)

Professional reference letters are accepted only for applicants out of university for at least three years. Templates are strongly recommended for Statement of Purpose and reference letters. Handwritten documents are not accepted. Secondary school certificates should not be uploaded.

Tuition and Costs for Self-Funded Students

Applicants not receiving Erasmus Mundus scholarships must pay:

  • European students (EU/UK): €9,990 per academic year
  • Non-European students: €11,990 per academic year

Additional UK top-up fees apply for semester 2 at Queen Mary University of London (£20,050) or University of Exeter (£12,000). A non-refundable €700 deposit is due after acceptance, with remainder due 31 July.

Alternative Funding Options

Self-funded students may apply for:

  • Erasmus+ mobility grant (travel and monthly allowance for mobility period)
  • Partner university scholarships (check QMUL, TU Dresden, University of Exeter, TalTech websites)
  • Home country scholarships (government, employers, organizations)

Specific opportunities mentioned include Indonesia LPDP, Québec Aide financière aux études, Taiwanese Ministry of Education scholarships, Türkiye Jean Monnet Scholarship, and Uzbekistan El-Yurt Umidi Foundation.

Selection Reality for African Applicants

The competition is exceptionally intense. For 2026/2027, 541 applications competed for approximately 12 scholarships. Geographic balance rules (maximum 10% from any country) work in favour of underrepresented regions including Africa. However, academic standards are uncompromising: First Class degrees and C1 English are effectively prerequisites. Zimbabwean applicants should also note that study pathways involving UK partners have fewer scholarship opportunities due to fee structures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Very competitive but not impossible. For 2026/2027, 541 applicants competed for ~12 scholarships. Geographic balance rules (max 10% from any country) favour underrepresented regions. However, you realistically need a First Class degree and C1 English level. Choose study pathways with European partners rather than UK partners, as more scholarships are available for those routes.
Yes, conditionally. You must prove 80% of credit points through completed module examinations or final thesis with certification from your university. You will receive a conditional offer with a deadline to submit your final degree certificate.
Only if your chosen study track includes UNISTRA (France) or UC3M (Spain). English-only tracks at TU Dresden, TalTech, QMUL, and University of Exeter require only C1 English. Check your preferred pathway before applying.
You lose Erasmus Mundus scholarship eligibility permanently for that intake. You may still apply for a self-funded place until 15 March 2027 (or 15 June 2027 late), but you will pay €11,990 annual tuition plus potential UK top-up fees.
No. The programme explicitly states: 'No exceptions (MOI certificates etc.) will be made.' Only listed certificates are accepted: IELTS Academic, Cambridge English, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, ISE, or WAEC (with time limits).
Limited options. You may qualify for Erasmus+ mobility grant during your mobility period (apply by early spring). Check individual partner university scholarships, or explore home country funding like employer sponsorship. The programme notes its own financial resources are very limited.
