Overview
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Economist Program (EP) 2027 is a prestigious three-year entry-level program designed for recent PhD graduates in macroeconomics and related fields. Based at IMF Headquarters in Washington, D.C., the program offers hands-on experience in economic policy analysis, country work, and research that directly shapes IMF engagement with its 191 member countries.
For African scholars from Zimbabwe and the SADC region, this represents a rare opportunity to join a leading global economic institution. The program combines structured training with substantive work assignments, creating a pathway to long-term careers in international economic policy.

What Participants Do
Work assignments vary by department, but core responsibilities fall into four categories:
Country Work
Analyze economic developments and risks for assigned countries or regions. Contribute to Article IV consultations (annual economic health checks) and IMF-supported programs. Develop policy advice tailored to specific national circumstances.
Policy Analysis
Assess fiscal, monetary, exchange rate, and financial sector policies. Examine macro-financial linkages and debt sustainability. Support work on economic governance, trade, and regional integration.
Research
Conduct analytical work on IMF policy priorities. Collaborate on working papers and policy publications. Apply quantitative methods to real-world policy questions.
Capacity Development
Assist member countries in strengthening economic institutions and technical expertise. Contribute to training programs and technical assistance missions.
Application Process
The selection process involves four stages over several months. Candidates should prepare thoroughly for each step.
Step 1: Preliminary Interview (30–40 minutes)
Shortlisted candidates discuss their research and field questions on economic topics relevant to IMF work. Interviewers assess analytical thinking, communication clarity, and interpersonal skills.
Step 2: Supporting Materials
Candidates who pass the preliminary interview submit:
- Most recent PhD transcript
- Three academic references (cannot be current IMF staff)
- One research paper of publishable quality, or one to two dissertation chapters
Step 3: Panel Interview and Written Assessment
Finalists travel to Washington, D.C. for an in-person panel interview with senior IMF economists and HR. The panel evaluates:
- Knowledge of monetary, fiscal, balance of payments, and financial sector issues
- Analytical ability and policy judgment
- Written and oral communication skills
- Ability to explain complex issues clearly and structurally
Candidates also complete a 90-minute written assessment testing communication under time pressure.
Step 4: Final Review
An internal committee of senior staff reviews all assessment results. The panel interview and research paper carry the greatest weight in final decisions.

Representation: African economists remain underrepresented at the IMF. The institution actively seeks diverse candidates, and strong applications from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Nigeria, and other African nations are encouraged.
