What Is the Switzer Fellowship?
The Switzer Fellowship is a competitive environmental leadership award for graduate students in the United States who demonstrate exceptional commitment to environmental problem-solving and social equity. The fellowship invests in emerging leaders who will advance practical solutions to environmental challenges.
Unlike traditional scholarships focused solely on academic achievement, the Switzer Fellowship emphasizes applied leadership, community engagement, and the ability to drive positive environmental and social change. Fellows become part of the Switzer Network, a lifelong community of environmental professionals.

Who Should Apply
The fellowship strongly encourages applications from:
- Black, Indigenous, and students of color
- First-generation college students
- Individuals from groups traditionally underrepresented in environmental graduate programs
- Graduate students across all disciplines whose work addresses environmental challenges
For applicants from Zimbabwe and the SADC region, this represents a significant opportunity if you are enrolled in or planning to enroll in U.S. graduate programs. Your international perspective on environmental justice, climate adaptation, or community-based conservation would strengthen your application.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet these criteria:
- Be enrolled in or planning to enroll in a graduate program in the United States
- Demonstrate commitment to environmental problem-solving and leadership

The fellowship does not specify citizenship requirements in the available materials. International students enrolled in U.S. graduate programs should verify eligibility directly with the foundation.
Application Components
Required Materials
All materials must be submitted by the deadline. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
- Online application form — allows saving, editing, and progress tracking
- Three short-answer narrative questions (1,000 characters each):
- Why your environmental challenges are personally important and what practical solutions you hope to contribute
- An example of engaging people/communities affected by your environmental work
- What you hope to learn from and contribute to the Switzer Network beyond the fellowship year
- Two-page original essay (7,000 characters maximum) on leadership: what it means to you, how you have shown leadership, and your vision as an environmental leader
- Two professional letters of recommendation — submitted directly by recommenders in PDF format; one should ideally be academic
- Resume highlights — five most important academic, work/volunteer experiences, and honors (no publications or presentations)
- Most recent graduate academic transcripts — unofficial versions accepted; PDF or JPEG format
Writing Guidance
The essay and short answers are your opportunity to demonstrate leadership style and commitment to change. Focus on:
- Specific examples of past and future leadership
- Personal and professional challenges overcome
- How you will advance equity in environmental problem-solving

Academic work may be mentioned but should not dominate your narrative.
