What Is the DA Young Leaders Programme?
The Democratic Alliance (DA) Young Leaders Programme (YLP) is a year-long political leadership learning and development programme designed for South Africans between the ages of 18 and 35. It targets individuals who align themselves with the DA’s core values of Freedom, Fairness, Opportunity and Diversity.
Since its launch, the programme has produced more than 330 graduates who are actively shaping South Africa’s political and civic landscape. Participants gain practical leadership skills, expand their professional networks, and develop the confidence to pursue careers in politics, public service, or government.

Who Should Apply?
The YLP is designed for young people who are already making positive impacts in their communities. Ideal candidates demonstrate integrity, leadership, and a commitment to serving others. They are driven to create meaningful change while continuing to develop their own potential.

- Be South African citizens aged 18-35

- Be highly motivated with strong critical thinking and communication abilities
You do not need to be actively involved in the DA to apply, nor do you need a tertiary qualification. The programme values demonstrated leadership and community impact over formal political experience.
Programme Structure and Benefits
Over 12 months, participants engage in intensive development activities designed to prepare them for national-level leadership.

Practical Experience
Every participant completes a leadership project that creates tangible community impact. Past projects have included:
- Anti-gender-based violence awareness campaigns and mass gatherings
- School support programmes providing shoes and resources to disadvantaged children
- Female youth employment projects bridging education and employment gaps
- Housing and flood protection education in vulnerable Western Cape communities
Network and Alumni Success
The YLP alumni network is extensive and influential:
- 330+ graduates since programme launch
- 84 alumni currently serving in public office (MPs, MPLs, councillors)
- 7 members of DA national leadership are YLP alumni
Time Commitment and Logistics
The programme is designed to accommodate participants who work or study full-time. While specific session schedules are not published, the structure allows for continued employment or education alongside programme participation.
The programme includes residential retreats. Attendance at these retreats is mandatory, and transport to retreat venues is arranged by the programme.
