Overview

The UNFPA Tanzania Youth Advisory Panel (YAP) is a structured youth engagement mechanism established in 2006. It provides young Tanzanians with direct access to UNFPA programming, policy discussions, and national decision-making processes. For the 2027–2029 term, UNFPA will recruit up to 15 members to serve as youth advisors on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), gender equality, and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) implementation.

This is a voluntary, part-time commitment designed for young people who want to influence policy rather than pursue formal academic study. It complements UNFPA’s support for Tanzania’s National Youth Development Policy 2024 and the Tanzania Development Vision 2050.

Why Apply: Value for SADC Applicants

For young people in Zimbabwe and the broader SADC region considering regional opportunities, the YAP offers direct exposure to UN agency operations, multilateral policy processes, and SRHR programming at scale. The experience is transferable to advocacy roles, UN internships, and development sector careers across Africa. While Tanzania-specific, the YAP model demonstrates how youth advisory structures function—useful context for applicants seeking similar roles with UNFPA or other UN agencies in their home countries.

Important Limitations

UNFPA has not published: the exact start date for the 2027–2029 term; the selection criteria weighting; the number of applications received in prior years; or the specific geographic distribution of seats between Mainland and Zanzibar. Applicants should not assume automatic shortlisting based on any single qualification.

No. This opportunity is restricted to Tanzanian citizens. There are separate application streams for Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar. UNFPA does not publish application numbers or selection rates. However, they prioritize gender-equal inclusion and actively seek disadvantaged and marginalized youth, including people with disabilities. Strong candidates demonstrate concrete community involvement, clear knowledge of SRHR/gender/SDG issues, and organizational endorsement.
Your affiliated organization must provide a letter of support or endorsement confirming your active involvement and suitability for the role. The letter should be on organizational letterhead if possible, though UNFPA does not specify exact format requirements.
No direct employment pathway is published. The YAP is an advisory volunteer role, not an internship or junior staff position. However, it provides significant exposure to UNFPA operations and networks that may support future applications for UN internships, consultancies, or staff positions.
